Wood or Multi Fuel ? - Which stove do I have and what's the difference?

I have had several people asking me to remind them about the difference between wood and multi-fuel so I\'m just going to run over it again so you can get the best from your stoves. First: How to identify the stove you have. NOTE: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT SOME STOVES HAVE ONE OR MORE AIR VENTS AND MAY LOOK SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT TO THESE PICTURES BUT THE MAIN THING IS TO SEE IF IT HAS A GREAT. Wood Burning Only Stoves:  Also called wood-fuel stoves, log burners, they solely run on wood logs, generally, as a rule, they have a solid base inside with no ash pan. Wood burns best on a bed of ash and it is therefore only necessary to remove surplus ash from on top of the grate occasionally. Burn only dry, well-seasoned wood, which should have been cut, split and stacked for at least 12 months, with free air movement around the sides of the stack to enable it to dry out. Get in the habit of bringing in a stack so it can dry out inside in a log basket or log store. Or you could buy kiln

Do I Need To Buy An Ecodesign Ready Stove Now?

Ecodesign Ready stoves are designed to reduce PM emissions by burning wood more efficiently and completely. New legislation states that all new stove or fire sales from 2022 will need to be Ecodesign models. If you are looking to buy a stove now you do NOT have to buy an \'Eco-design ready\' stove as the law doesn\'t come into effect until January 2022 but some models are already available and The Stove House are happy to talk you through these stoves along with our other models from our wide range. Please do get in touch if you would like us to answer any questions you have or to book a survey. More

Disused fireplace opened up and a Dik Geurts Aste 5 woodburner installed

Here The Stove House opened up a disused fireplace and installed a Dik Geurts Aste 5 Low woodburning stove with a honed black slate hearth. With a heat output of 4.9 kW, it can easily heat a large room, but its low emissions qualify it for DEFRA approval in smokeless zones which means no additional air supply was required to the room. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BOOK A SURVEY TO ARRANGE A STOVE INSTALLATION OR STOVE SERVICE PLEASE DO GET IN TOUCH. More

Does your woodburner leak smoke into the room at times?

This can happen for several reasons. Weather (Strong winds or very cold) Exposed property location (Hills, Seafront etc) Poor draw Lack of ventilation   Occasionally? Sometimes your woodburner which usually behaves its self, but on occasions puffs smoke into the room, usually when lighting the fire it is probably because of a pocket of air has formed within the flue and has stopped the draw of the smoke and now is blocking the exit route, meaning the smoke has nowhere else to go but out of your stoves air vents. ? To prevent this from happening you can either use an extra handful of kindling and place it evenly around the firebox or put a sheet of newspaper flat on top of a piece of wood inside the stove and light it in each corner. By doing this it creates a sudden burst of intense heat up the chimney, which will dislodge the air pocket and allow the smoke to exit the fire in the correct manner.  To prevent this from happening in the future, leave your air vents fully op

Does the legislation affect the sale of open fires and fireplaces?

Yes, open fires and fireplaces will no longer be able to be sold as solid fuel heating appliances after 2022 due to their poor efficiency and particulate emissions. Open fires lose 80% of its valuable heat they produce up the chimney and takes with it your very expensive central heating meaning you are burning approximately 3 times the amount of fuel you need to be on your fire. If you kept this heat within your home you could save on your fuel and energy bills! That\'s why a woodburning stove is more environmentally friendly than an open fire. It uses less fuel, it converts its heat more efficiently, produces fewer emissions and it means you reduce your energy bills saving you money on the fuel that you would have used on your central heating which also reduces your carbon footprint. Plus the new Ecodesign ready stoves are even more efficientMore

CAN I KEEP USING MY EXISTING WOODBURNING STOVES?

When the Ecodesign programme comes into force for stoves in the UK in January 2022 it does not mean you are unable to use your existing stove or that you have to replace it as of yet. This is because the Clean Air Strategy does not say there will be a ban on the use of existing wood or multi-fuel appliances, nor do you need to modify your appliance. However, you should be burning quality dry “Ready to Burn” wood or quality smokeless fuels. Kiln dried logs are the best to use as they have 20% or less moisture content.   REMEMBER - You can’t burn water! The energy in your fire will be used to try to keep the wood burning instead of being converted into heat. Also, you will create heavy deposits that will coat your door glass and liner and shorten its life expectancy. Dry wood is more cost effective. If in doubt buy one of our moisture meters and ensure the wood you burn is 20% moisture content or less. More information on green wood and wood types can be found here
